SPOILER ALERT Episode 1 New Characters and Places - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Hey Ponyfans, here's my first episode recap for Friendship is Magic - Episode 1! I'm going to try and be sensitive about spoilers, so I'm dropping a SPOILER ALERT in front of any posts that might have spoilers in them, and playing it safe with what I'll consider a spoiler. I'm also going to try adding a "read more" jump in my posts, this will be my first time trying that so hopefully it will work. For those of you subscribing by RSS or e-mail, even if it works on the website I don't think it will also work for those subscriptions, so my apologies. (If any savvy readers know how to get jumps in a Blogger blog to also work in FeedBurner subscriptions, please let me know).

For my episode recaps, I'm focusing on just covering new ponies and places. I'm choosing not to do blow by blow episode descriptions, though I will (separately) post the brief episode descriptions from the TV guides/schedules.

So without further ado, after the jump, here are the new characters and places introduced in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Episode 1:

All of the main characters (Twilight Sparkle, Spike, Princess Celestia, Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie) are introduced in the first episode. Since I've already done lots of posts on these lead ponies, I'm going to go ahead and skip to the new stuff.

Princess Celestia, Twilight Sparkle, and Spike all live in Canterlot, in the Kingdom of Equestria.

We get a glimpse of some of the other Canterlot residents.

The only Canterlot pony with a speaking role is the white pony with pink hair (above). None of them have names. However, they do mention the name of another Canterlot pony (who isn't shown): Moondancer.

Canterlot also appears to have some royal guards (pictured above) - again, no names, and not speaking roles (though they do neigh a bit).

The town of Ponyville is also in Equestria. First stop is Sweet Apple Acres, home of the Apple Family.

Apple Family members listed but not pictured are Apple Streudel, Apple Tart, Baked Apples, Apple Brioche, and Apple Cinnamon Crisp.

Beyond Sweet Apple Acres, Ponyville also has a town hall, Rarity's house, and a library.

A Ponyville performance of The Wonderbolts, a team of "the most talented flyers in all of Equestria", is briefly mentioned, though beyond their poster they are not seen.

Ponyville's Mayor is also introduced in this episode.

The villain of the episode is Night Mare Moon.

There's also a tiny cameo of Sweetie Belle (with Apple Bloom to her left and an unknown pony to her right).

Finally, while it's neither character nor location, one concept introduced in the episode is the Elements of Harmony, "the most powerful magic known to ponykind".

Two of the Canterlot unicorns actually had a (albeit very short) speaking part, but since the second is not seen as she speaks, we don't know if she's supposed to be the yellow or the blue. You can hear that there are definitely two voices though.

Unknown unicorn (probably yellow - Tabitha St.Germain): "There you are, Twilight!"
White unicorn (Cathy Weseluck): "Moondancer is having a little get together at the West Castle Courtyard. You want to come?"

And after Twilight Sparkle's runs off to study, they both speak again.

White unicorn (Cathy Weseluck): "Does that pony do anything except study?"
Unknown pony (presumably yellow - Tabitha St.Germain): "I think she's more interested in books than friends."

What makes this more confusing is that the animators made a mistake and had the white one's mouth moving to that last line. :P

Oh, and if you check the voice cast at the end, Madeline Peters has been credited as 'Scootaloo' (at least I think that's what it says on my fuzzy Youtube copy), so I'm guessing that's the baby pony we see with Apple Bloom and Sweetie-Belle, even though she had no speaking part in this episode. :)

Good ear Desiree. And nice sighting on Scootaloo, I totally thought the baby pony looked like her.

On Facebook, there is an official fan page called My Little Pony. There is a picture of the 'Unknown Pony' in their Wall Photos!

Here's the picture catinmlp referenced: Facebook/MLP. If it's Scootaloo, they've made her a pegasus. (Could be, they did it to Rainbow Dash).
