It's the First Anniversary of My Little Pony News!

Image from the My Little Pony Party Time Coloring Book

Hooray! It's the 1st Anniversary for
My Little Pony News!

A year ago today I had the crazy idea to start a blog all about the latest stuff happening with My Little Pony. It turned out to be a super exciting year for MLP, and to my surprise people started reading my reports. Thank you so much to all my readers for making this year so great!

Site Highlight Friday: Ponyland Press

Ponyland Press is a great resource for European G1 (1982-1995) Pony Releases. That alone is enough to recommend it, but there is so much more. Like last week's feature, Where the Rainbow Ends, there is an assortment of super cute games. There's great information on Pony Merchandise.

My favorite section has to be The Town, which has a collection of the most adorable photos and descriptions of a Pony Town. This Wedding is utterly darling, and the rest of the Town pages are equally full of charm.

My Little Pony is the Meaning of Life

Lady_Butterscotch at the MLP Arena has proven that My Little Pony is the Meaning of Life.
"1. New show airs on October 10th.
2. October 10th is 10/10/10.
3. When we remove the slash marks we get 101010.
4. 101010 is the number 42 in binary code.
5. As good nerds and geeks know, the number 42 is the meaning of life. Because Douglas Adams said so.
6. Therefore, because we have come to associate
10/10/10 -} 101010 -} 42 with MLPs, we can therefore assume that My Little Pony is the meaning of life."

Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood vs The Hub

Hub Logo Source

The Campaign for a Commercial Free Childhood is concerned about Hasbro owning The Hub, according to parentdish.
"Even before The Hub launched, the Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC), a watchdog organization devoted to limiting the impact of commercial culture on kids, came out strongly against Hasbro's participation in the new venture, telling The Times it's like an "infomercial."

...

"We certainly hope that the FCC will take a closer look, and that what The Hub does is show that the few rules we have about protecting children from over-commercialization are both inadequate and not enforced" "
The CFCC has recently petitioned the FCC against Nicktoons series Zevo-3, which features characters originally developed for Sketchers Shoe commercials. They claim that the series is a "program-length commercial", in violation of FCC rules. While the outcome of that petition is still to be determined, it may have an impact on The Hub and shows that feature characters from toy lines, like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. However, there may be a fine line of difference between toy company shows, and shows featuring spokes-characters.

Any ruling by the FCC against shows based on toys, like My Little Pony, would have a major impact on everything from TV showings of Hollywood feature films (like the Transformers franchise) to the Disney marketing machine.
"“Just because there is a character in a program that initially originated as a toy, does not transform the program into a program-length commercial or a commercial at all,” Association of National Advertisers executive vice president Dan Jaffe said. “To ban or severely restrict these programs if they don’t have an explicit selling message would be censorship of noncommercial speech that has the highest level of First Amendment protection.”"

My Little Pony at Washington International Horse Show Tomorrow

My Little Pony is going to be at the Washington International Horse Show, starting tomorrow. The show runs from October 26-31, 2010 at the Verizon Center in Washington DC.

Site Highlight Friday: Where the Rainbow Ends

Where the Rainbow Ends is a fun site covering all generations of My Little Pony. It has many of the features other sites have - an ID Machine, ponies sorted by year. But dig a bit deeper and there's a lot of unique, cool content. My favorites:
  • A Font Guide, with the fonts used on MLP packaging identified
  • Cute pony games
  • Comics! And some are scanned in so you can see all the pony pages!
Definitely check out Where the Rainbow Ends for these fun things, and lots more!

Pony Science - Pony Cancer Under a Microscope

BlackCurtains at the MLP Arena has moved the pony community forward in the fight against pony cancer, by identifying a potential cause. Pony cancer appears as impossible to remove brown spots on older ponies; pony collectors have theorized that the cause may be plastic deterioration or mold. As you can see in the above video, a slice of pony cancer appears to have bacteria around the cancer spot. More research is needed to determine where the bacteria is indeed the cause of pony cancer, but it's a significant breakthrough.

BlackCurtains is seeking donations of cancer-striken ponies or pony cancer spots to continue this research.

There are also microscopic images of pin-dot available here. Pin-dot is another vintage pony affliction that appears as a rash of small black dots. BlackCurtain's research shows that the damage does not go entirely through the plastic, though does not determine a cause for the discoloration.

ETA: Here is the original MLP Arena thread where BlackCurtains posted this video: Pony Cancer - Magnified

Operation Scan and Save My Little Pony Puzzles

Image via Target

There are lots of adorable MLP puzzles available, but puzzles are a tricky thing to collect. Pieces go missing, cardboard deteriorates over time. Hillary at MyLittlePonyCollecting.com has a great idea to preserve MLP puzzles.
"What if those of us that had a few My Little Pony puzzles on hand were to scan them in. In other words, scan in the front of the box (so we know what the puzzle is supposed to look like) as well as the individual pieces. In theory, if someone really wanted to, they could print out the scanned in pieces on a color printer and recreate the puzzle themselves at home just for fun. This wouldn’t decrease the value of the originals but would be a way for people to enjoy some of the puzzles they may never have seen before."
Hillary is getting started by scanning her five vintage puzzles. If you'd like to contribute, visit Operation Scan and Save My Little Pony Puzzles.

Powerpoint Pony Game

Katra21 at the MLP Arena has shared an adorable Pony PowerPoint Game.
"Style-wise I'd say so far it resembles a kid friendly interactive comic book. This first installment, "Storm's Request" serves to quickly introduce the characters. Hopefully the navigation is self explanatory and you'll all be able to enjoy it for a quick giggle.

Now I'm addicted, working on the second installment, character profiles, and all kinds of madness."

I will unfortunately get a bit behind on the latest and greatest. I'll catch up and my regular posting will start again around November 2, 2010. If you can't wait, here are a few of my favorite pony news sources:

SPOILER ALERT Episode 1 New Characters and Places - My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

Hey Ponyfans, here's my first episode recap for Friendship is Magic - Episode 1! I'm going to try and be sensitive about spoilers, so I'm dropping a SPOILER ALERT in front of any posts that might have spoilers in them, and playing it safe with what I'll consider a spoiler. I'm also going to try adding a "read more" jump in my posts, this will be my first time trying that so hopefully it will work. For those of you subscribing by RSS or e-mail, even if it works on the website I don't think it will also work for those subscriptions, so my apologies. (If any savvy readers know how to get jumps in a Blogger blog to also work in FeedBurner subscriptions, please let me know).

For my episode recaps, I'm focusing on just covering new ponies and places. I'm choosing not to do blow by blow episode descriptions, though I will (separately) post the brief episode descriptions from the TV guides/schedules.

So without further ado, after the jump, here are the new characters and places introduced in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic Episode 1:

New: Rarity with Light-Up Horn

Rarity with Light-Up Horn - Image Via Big Bad Toy Store

I recently adopted a well-loved Majesty pony from a friend; amongst its charms was glow-in-the-dark paint applied to the unicorn horn, so it would light-up. While I plan to restore Majesty, I think I may have to re-apply a fresh coat of glow paint, I'm so charmed by the memorial to childhood ingenuity.

Kids today don't have to paint, since Rarity with a light-up horn will be released December 2010. This pretty pony is already available for pre-order for $9.99 at the Big Bad Toy Store. She was also listed earlier this week, without a picture, on Entertainment Earth.

Site Highlight Friday: The My Little Pony Rereleases Encyclopedia

There seems to be a shortage of information on G3.5 ponies, those in the style released over the past couple of years (2009-2010). Perhaps it's due the limiting of ponies to the Core 7 characters. Luckily, we have the My Little Pony Rereleases Encyclopedia. A few clicks and you can see all the different versions of the "new look" ponies, with their variations in cutie marks and accessories. The site also includes information on rereleases of G3 (2003-2009) ponies, and Ponyville, with a keen eye on subtle variations between different pony releases.
