Gossip on the My Little Pony TV Series

Ringlet at the Trading Post spotted an article about the new My Little Pony TV series from Advertising Age. The series will be on new channel The Hub, which launches 10/10/10, and is a collaboration between Discovery Communications and Hasbro.

There's a blurb on the series, titled "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic":
"Emmy-winner Lauren Faust ("The Powerpuff Girls", "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends") presents a unique peek into the magical world of Equestria, where "Twilight Sparkle", a unicorn pony with a talent for magic spells, co-exists with her pony friends. Each episode follows "Twilight Sparkle" and pals as they embark on wondrous adventures."
Lauren Faust has apparently been posting some updates on the series on her DeviantArt page.  Here she posts about being the "Creative Steward" of MLP, and in the comments reveals
"The 2-part premiere has one big villian!!! Hope you like her!"
 and
"Except for Applejack and Spike, Hasbro lost all the copyright and trademark rights to all the names from characters in the 80's, so I couldn't bring back anyone but those two.

However, there will be male ponies in the show--- not a lot, but they'll be there."
And then here she tells us that what I called the ponies I liked from the toy fair are

"...based on the show I developed and am currently producing.

...

As far as I know, these are teaser prototypes. I'm not very much part of the toy process--- I designed the characters (as seen in the art on the background piece) for animation, and the talented Hasbro artists did the sculpts, so I'm not sure what the final toys will look like. For anyone curious, I DO know they are working on versions with rooted, comb-able hair, so don't go throwing out your little, plastic, heart-shaped brushes just yet!"
(Also, apologies to Ms. Faust on calling them anime-styled. Though that's more a reflection on the Hasbro artists than on her original art.)

Also, the pink pony is Pinkie Pie. So Applejack, Spike, and Pinkie Pie - a combination of old and new characters.

What about Bow Tie. Hasbro make a new version of Bow Tie as well so she could bring back the old Bow Tie instead of useing the new version. After all Applejack and Spike both have new versions.

Hmm, they did make a new Bowtie, I didn't know that. I dunno, copyright law is a mystery to me.

They had more than that... Moondancer, Starswirl, Minty, and probably others.

I'm also really excited to hear that there will be a villain! It will be a nice throwback to the original show. Hopefully it won't be some misunderstood soul that ends up being friends with the ponies, although that also happened a few times in the original...

I believe when they say they lost the copyright to them she is referring to their character in association with their names. We also have a G3 Applejack but it has a different symbol/color scheme therefor it would stand to reason that it has a separate copyright.
