Season 1, Episode 2 Recap - My Little Pony:Friendship is Magic

I'm finally going to start catching up on episode recaps. So far I've only done one for Episode 1. As I said in that post, "For my episode recaps, I'm focusing on just covering new ponies and places. I'm choosing not to do blow by blow episode descriptions." Really, it's ponies, places, music, and other important highlights.

So, here's Episode 2 - "Friendship is Magic (Part 2): The Elements of Harmony", after the jump.

This episode introduces another location, the Everfree Forest, location of the Ancient Castle of the Royal Pony Sisters.

The Everfree Forest is a scary place for the ponies, who describe it as creepy, dreadful and unnatural. Applejack says, "Folks say it don't work the same way as Equestria", and Rainbow Dash claims that "every pony who has ever come in, has never come out".

In the Everfree Forest the ponies come across some unusual creatures. There's a Manticore (previously seen in Fluttershy's Character Introduction Video).

There's also a Sea Serpent.

Rainbow Dash also meets the Shadowbolts, a dark mirror of her beloved Wonderbolts (see episode 1), who claim to be the "greatest aerial team in the Everfree Forest." The Wonderbolts do not appear to be real, as they are formed by Nightmare Moon's mist.

Pinkie Pie sings in this episode! This song is unofficially called "Giggle at the Ghosties Ghostly" - if anyone knows the official title, please comment below to let me know. (Title and lyrics edited March 18, 2011 with corrections from listening to this version via here)

You can download an mp3 of the song from Misty Moonlight at the MLPTP.

And here are lyrics from Lady M at MLPTP
"Pinkie Pie:
When I was a little filly
And the sun was going down . . .

Twilight Sparkle: Tell me she's not . . .

Pinkie Pie:
The darkness and the shadows,
They would always make me frown.

Rarity: She is.

Pinkie Pie:
I'd hide under my pillow
From what I thought I saw
But Granny Pie said that wasn't the way
To deal with fears at all.

Rainbow Dash: Then what is?

Pinkie Pie:
She said, "Pinkie, you gotta stand up tall,
"Learn to face your fears.
"You'll see that they can't hurt you.
"Just laugh and to make them disappear."
Ha! Ha! Ha!

So giggle at the ghosty ghostly,
Guffaw at the grossly,
Crack up at the creepy,
Whoop it up with the weepy,
Chortle at the pukey,
Snortle at the spooky,
And tell that big dumb scary face to take a hike and leave you alone and if he thinks he can scare you then he's got another thing coming and the very idea of such a thing just make you wanna . . . hahahaha . . . laugh!"

The 6 main pony characters are shown to represent the Elements of Harmony.

  • Applejack represents the element of Honesty
  • Fluttershy represents Kindness
  • Pinkie Pie represents Laughter
  • Rarity represents Generosity
  • Rainbow Dash represents Loyalty
  • When the elements are combined with the spark of friendship, they create the 6th element, Magic, represented by Twilight Sparkle

As Elements of Harmony, the ponies all get necklaces matching their cutie marks, except Twilight who has a tiara matching her cutie mark.

Finally, Nightmare Moon is transformed into Princess Luna, and asked to reign side by side with her sister, Princess Celestia.
