Twilight Sparkle's Mom in MLP:FiM Season 1, Episode 23, "The Cutie Mark Chronicles," may have been inspired by G1 Twilight. From the comments on Lauren Faust's deviantArt page:

I remember thinking that would be a good idea, but I can't remember if I actually gave the direction, if our awesome art director and color stylists had the same idea, or if it was all a coincidence. Either way, I think the nod to the previous generation is appropriate, don't you?"

Also Twilight(G4) sometimes really reminds me of Twilight(G1) with being slightly confused and out of grip (althou it's more often about her social skills than magic) while wielding a great potential.
Can't wait for the season finale and will wait patiently for Season 2
